- Ho Chi Minh and his communist supporters resisted Japanese occupation during WWII
- After WWII the French reoccupied
- Ho Chi Minh fought the French and defeated them in 1954 (Dien Bien Phu)
- Laos, Cambodia granted independence
- Vietnam divided along the 17th parallel
SUMMARY :
Vietnam War was a war primarily fought by the Americans, but the Australians do join. It was a war that peoples hearts and minds had to be one; however, the Americans did a poor job and eventually lost. Started when the French wanted to reoccupy the territory, Ho Chi Minh and the communist didn't want any foreign invasions, they defeated the French. Creating a fear in the US of the domino effect.
Americans got involved by:
Fabricated --> American destroyer was fired at by a torpedoed.
This brought Tonkin Gulf Resolution which lead to the commitment of regular ground troops and air support.
