Lenin’s Death - Leon Trotsky vs. Josef Stalin
Notes:
- Lenin after the Civil War
- Lenin set up the comintern (communist international) to spread the revolution worldwide
- Led to signing deals with countries to rebuild
- Treaty of Rapallo - Russians made war material for the Germans (against the Treaty of Versailles)
- Received steel manufacturing technology from Germany
- 922 Bolshevik Party became the Communist Party
- Russia became the Soviet Union
- Lenin was shot in 1921 - never fully recovered
- Dies in Jan. 1924
Lenin and Trotsky do not have the slightest idea of the meaning of freedom or the Rights of Man. They have already become poisoned with the filthy venom of power, and this is shown by their shameful attitude towards freedom of speech, the individual, and all those other civil liberties for which the democracy struggled.
SUMMARY :
Lenin original wanted for both Trotsky and Stalin to have equal power but after his death Trotsky never stood a chance. Leon Trotsky was a more favoured person between him and Stalin based on the citizens point of view: however Stalin had a role that allowed him to build trust and support amongst certain important people. So when Lenin died he had the support behind him. He exiled Trotsky and got rid of all political threats.
Quotes:
“The entire labour of practical organisation of the insurrection was placed under the immediate direction of the President of the Petrograd Soviet, Comrade Trotsky. It can be stated with certainty, that the party owes the rapid coming over of the garrison into the camp of the soviets and the skillful work of the Revolutionary Military Committee above all, and particularly to Comrade Trotsky.”
Joseph Stalin, November 1917
“An army cannot be built without repression. The commander will always find it necessary to place the soldier between the possibility that death lies ahead and the certainty that it lies behind.”
Leon Trotsky
Joseph Stalin, November 1917
“An army cannot be built without repression. The commander will always find it necessary to place the soldier between the possibility that death lies ahead and the certainty that it lies behind.”
Leon Trotsky
Subjunctive questions:
Had Stalin not had the role of General Secretary of the Communist Party would the events in Germany have taken place?
